The concept of co-working and shared office space is still fairly new to South Africa. However, the movement is growing, particularly in Cape Town and in Johannesburg. Johannesburg's co-working spaces are located in up and coming, or already established business areas. Many of the spaces emphasise their creative environment and their bustling, central and vibrant locations.

As we get further into the age of the digital nomad, professionals no longer need the expense of a private and dedicated office space, and are certainly growing weary of working from home. As a result, co-working spaces are becoming more and more popular as the need for them rises. Jobs which require a lot of travel, or very little time in the office find great value in the flexibility of co-working spaces.

Innovative collaboration is one of the aspects which makes co-working spaces so appealing, and some spaces have catered to this and focus on particular professional niches, while other spaces hold networking events and seminars aimed at different professional genres. As they (generally) come fully equipped with furniture and facilities, co-working spaces are of particular use to startups and SMEs who are able to cut down on their setup costs, but not on their professional image.
